Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Whenever a significant awards ceremony nears, one notices a clamor to include of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
